Moose checking out his new environs. |
My human recognized yesterday that when my prey instinct kicks in--visual specifically--noises do not bother me as much. I become so focused on SQUIRRELS that nothing seems to break my concentration. He noticed today while walking me if I am "onto" a scent of another dog or possibly prey, my concentration does not wane--noises do not penetrate. After leaving work yesterday, while walking across the park to our vehicle, there were so many squirrels and I was enthralled. My human was carrying a plastic bag with two Tupperware (Sistema to be exact) containers and he apparently checked on how the noise would affect me in my heightened state of concentration. He shook the bag knocking the containers into one another--the noise didn't phase me. He also crinkled the plastic, behind me and to the side of me--the noise did not break me from the trance I was under. He did this many times to make sure it wasn't a fluke, and it wasn't. Although hearing is only one of the five sense I possess, it doesn't seem to be paralyzing me from being able to ignore sound if I really want to. My human also noticed last night that indoor noises affect me more than noises I encounter outside. Although, there are some outdoor noises that will make me skittish, but I am becoming more desensitized on our walks . . . the more walks in busy areas with more noises, the less skittish I become.
So, now is the time my human begins researching scent and prey instinct drives and how to incorporate them into training me. I know Moose could possibly excel in schutzhund training, or actual herding work, or a myriad of training styles . . . it's now about the right fit.
